JAWIB June Spotlight is on Kathleen Whiting!

She may not be a new face to everyone since she's been the Marketing Director for the West Jordan Chamber of Commerce for almost a year now. This job isn't so new to her since she did the same thing about 15 years ago!  Finding Kathleen is easy, she's the petite brunette with seriously good style and amazing personality beaming off of her.  Kathleen grew up in Salt Lake and now lives in West Jordan right near the Water Conservation Park. She says she has the BEST family with a husband everyone should envy since he treats her like a princess.  She has 4 daughters, 1 son and 1 daughter in law and 1 son in law.  So far she has one grandson that Kathleen will gush about since he's "the cutest world wide" and another grandbaby on the way.  Kathleen is passionate about shopping, loves to craft and sew but especially loves any time she gets with her grandson.  On top of working with WJCC she owns a Sno Shack, and has done so for the past 21 years.  Sno Cones aside, she has to have a Large Cola Slurpee every day, rain or shine! Kathleen adores her friends and family and enjoys that her job lets her be out in the community meeting new people. We are lucky to have her as the JAWIB WJCC liaison!

JAWIB Member Spotlight - Carol Lund with First Utah Bank in Riverton

Carol Lund works at First Utah Bank.  She is the Branch Manger in Riverton and a Vice President of the bank.  Four years ago she came to First Utah Bank after spending almost 30 years with Key Corp.  She enjoys the operations of a community bank mainly because the decisions that are made have the local economy in mind and are made by people who live and work right here in Salt Lake County.  She likes that in her job she is able to volunteer her time with the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce as well as be a member of JAWIB.  The title on her business cards read  “Empress of Customer Comfort” and she lives up to the title every day.  Carol always goes above and beyond to ensure that everyone she works with will become loyal, lifelong customers.  She loves being a personal banker to everyone that walks in the door.

Tricia Cook with Pure Romance will be speaking to us about how to keep passion in networking as well as personal relationships.

Now a few words from Tricia:

I am happily married to my best friend, Craig, for 20 years. We have 3 children, 19,  17 and 15.  I was lucky to be able to be a stay at home mom for 16 years. I re-entered the 9-5 world just over a year ago.

I have been a part time Relationship Consultant for the last 8 years with two different companies. I manage a successful team and am the Utah new Consultant trainer.  My personal focus has always been on educating women and giving them permission to develop and embrace their intimate relationships, guilt free.

JAWIB Member Spotlight - Amanda Norman Owner of Sports Clips

Sports Clips

Amanda is a South Jordan resident and has been cutting hair since 2009 and worked for Sports Clips for the last 3 years.  She likes working with her clients because it affords her the opportunity to really get to know people. She enjoys finding out how she can relate to her customers on a more personal level.  She loves sports of all kinds, especially volleyball, which she both plays and coaches, devours all things Disney and absolutely anything Harley Davidson, with plans of owning her first motorcycle in the next year.

When Amanda decided to become a Sports Clips owner 7 months ago, she did so in hopes of being able to make a difference in her local communities.  She said “I may not be able to change the world, but I now I can make a difference in the lives of my employees and my customers.”  After meeting Amanda you will see that she is doing exactly that.  Her upbeat, positive attitude is infectious and she’s jumped into her business and the community with both feet.  She was recently elected to be on the board of the South West Valley Chamber of Commerce serving Riverton, Herriman and Bluffdale.  She has rsvp’d to the JAWIB Curling Event on March 14th at the Olympic Oval, so keep an eye out for her and introduce yourself, you’ll be glad you did!

JAWIB Industry Expert Toukata Suyoto - Savings For Now And The Future

Are we saving enough for our future, or are we saving enough for now?  Many Americans aren’t saving enough.  We are saving less than 5 percent compared to Japan’s personal savings rate at 15 percent.  We need to increase our savings in the US to at least be a national standard that we can retire comfortably.  Our Gen X and Gen Y are learning a hard lesson from their parents.  A quarter of respondents from the ‘Gen Y’ generations –born between 1977 and 1989 said they were funding both their 401k or 403b plans and their IRA’s.  And 23 percent of ‘Gen Xers’ born between 1965 and 1977 said they were funding both.  The good news is that many working American, especially those who are young are taking advantage of savings for retirement in a tax free environment through options like an IRA despite a tough economy.  But funding these accounts on a regular basis is the key-even if it’s a small amount. Every year that you don’t fund your IRA is lost opportunity for tax regrowth.  In these difficult economic times more and more Americans are finding that they are not prepared for retirement.  Now is the time and I think Americans are ready for it.  People are growing weary of a plastic life, paid for by plastic cards on revolving accounts that never get paid off.  People are also growing leery of foreigners taking greater control of our resources-even to the financing (at a handsome profit) of our national debts.  As a nation, we should make a commitment to do all the right things to put our country on  a sound track financially (which public opinion polls show we all want), and to embrace as an individuals a strategy of personal savings and investment, no matter how small.

Finally with tax season upon us-it is not too late to take advantage of opening an IRA accounts, please consult your tax advisor to which type of an IRA best fit you and your retirement goals.  Please visit any Zion’s Bank branches to open your future for a better retirement life.

For more information for your future savings and budgeting please visit www.zionsbank.com/learning-center.  Zion’s Bank has team up with David Ramsey’s Financial Peace University to manage your money, to eliminate debt, and to build wealth.  It takes just 91 days for Zions Bank to teach you how to be debt free.

Valentine's Ideas from A Perfect Arrangement

Our February article is by Darla Anderson of  A Perfect Arrangement

Ahhh!  Love is in the air.  It’s that time of year again when warm thoughts turn to our significant others.  What can you get him?  . . .  The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach - so maybe a bucket of junk food or a more elegant chocolate, cookies, and nuts basket. . . or a unique balloon bouquet to embarrass him at work?   We also have video roses!  Send a rose with a special “speaking roses” code.  When he places the rose with a special emblem in front of his webcam, a video of you and your message will play on the screen!!  We can also imprint a rose with a message like “I love you!” or “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Will this be the year that all those hints for flowers come to fruition??  How can you make your roses last the longest?  There are many tricks you’ve heard like aspirin or pennies or Sprite.  Basically, flowers need food (sugar) and bacteria prevention.  The floral food packets the florists give out are the surest way to get the correct measurements of each.  Recut the stems at an angle and change the water every two-three days to prevent the stems from clogging.   Flowers like temperatures between 32 and 40 degrees, so keep them in the coolest  part of your home avoiding sunny windows or  heaters.   If the rose heads droop, you can lay them in a tub of warm water (recut) overnight and they will perk up again.

To the rose growers, Valentine’s is their “Black Friday”, so they increase the price.  Don’t blame the poor florists who are just trying to maintain consistent profit margins.  We can build a design for any budget that looks pretty even if roses aren’t included.  We would be happy to answer any questions; call us at 801-233-8776 and visit our website aperfectarrangement.com
